Why We Were Created
Spencer Reid Foundation is a New York Not-for-Profit Corporation created in May of 2011 after we heard the devastating news that one of our dearest and closest friends’ son had been diagnosed with leukemia.
Spencer, at the age of 17 months, became one of the thousands of children diagnosed each year with this life threatening illness. His diagnosis hit us close to our hearts and opened our eyes to exactly what a family faces when their child is confronted with years of arduous treatments. Spencer’s experience has shown us that the daily joys of childhood take a back seat to the rigorous treatments and hospitalizations. Children need something to put a smile on their faces during these grueling times.
Additional stress and fear was put on Spencer’s family when his mom had to quit her job to care for him. We know that they are not alone in this battle. Many other families are in similar situations. Our hope is that we can lessen the stress that children suffer during their fight against cancer and reduce the financial burden that parents face. Parents can then focus on what really matters – putting smiles back on their children’s faces and helping them become cancer survivors!
